About the Southern Tier Bike Project

The Southern Tier Bike Project was started in the fall of 2009 by Gary Wilde, a long-time resident of New York's Southern Tier. After working 32 years for a local defense company, raising a family and devoting any precious spare time to recreational golf and cycling activities, Gary decided it was time to give back to the community.

To sum up his motivation for the Southern Tier Bike Project, Gary states: "Throughout my working life, I was always concerned about being over-committed to the point where I couldn't follow through on my commitments. Because of that, I rarely got involved in "causes" outside of work, family and personal needs. As retirement approached, I knew I was not the rocking-chair type and I decided it was time to expend my energy on a project related to one of the things I love to do most: cycling."

Over the past 10 years of active cycling, Gary has undertaken any maintenance or repair work needed to keep his bikes (and his friends' bikes) in perfect running order. Now that he is retired, he intends to use these skills to recycle unwanted or unneeded bicycles and put them in the hands of people who maybe don't have the money to buy a new bicycle (or even a garage sale bike for that matter).

With a head full of ideas and just enough web expertise to be dangerous, Gary developed the first (of probably many) iterations of this website. Gary hopes that the "Project" will play a small part in connecting people with something in excess to those who are without. "Through hundreds or thousands of seemingly insignificant kindnesses from one human being to another, the world will be a better place for all". The Southern Tier Bike Project is ONE kindness. Please help make it a success.
